Thrifty Shopping at Thrift Shops
Thrift shops are a great way to save money. You know the saying … one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
The key is to scout out the best ones in your area where all the shop-a-holics take there stuff after they’ve tired of it in mere months. Some of the best ones that I have come across are church thrift shops. You can find everything from furniture and household items to books, clothing, craft items and more. You can even find brand new items with the tags still on.
You need to go often as new items come in daily and the good things go quickly. I personally like to scout out little things for the house — maybe it’s a pot for a plant or a basket I can use for storage. The prices are a fraction of what you would pay in store. It’s kind of like going to garage sales, only it’s all in one place and it’s more organized.
I wanted to share my latest find for the holidays. I got four gold deer (see picture) for $1.00 each. They were originally priced $2.00 each, but the day I went in they were having a sale – 50% off all Christmas holiday decorations. Yes, they even have sales … you can’t beat that. I did a quick online search and found them priced from $4.89 to $6.49 each at an online discount retailer. But you would also have to pay shipping. I found another online retailer that wanted $16.14 each, but it included tax and shipping. Crazy.
Think of how thrify you can be by shopping at thrift shops. And, not to mention, it’s fun to hunt for and find that great bargin!

My mom has always been a huge fan of thrift stores, and now that I’m a mom too, I agree! We just went to her favorite thrift store last week and I got about 20 name-brand outfits for my baby boy (and you know that most baby clothes are often only worn once!) plus about 20 books for $40! I could have spent that on ONE item of clothing at Gymboree. Now my biggest problem is making sure he wears everything before he outgrows it all!
Jenni,
Thanks for the great comment in support of thrift stores. I too have come across some wonderful finds. I got tons of great baskets pre-holiday and made gift baskets for the elderly in our neighborhood. I paid $0.50 to $1.00 each and they would have easily cost $6.00 – $12.00+ per basket at a store. I got 8 baskets for $6.75. What a deal. I’ve gotten items with the tags still on and more fun finds. The great thing is that you can always take the baby clothes back to the thrift store for another little boy to enjoy once your son out grows them.
